Many people think that audio books are a very recent invention, but they would not be accurate. This is because of the technological language that is associated with audio books, such as  CDs, downloadable digital formats, PDAs, MP3s, etc. But audio books started a long time ago. In fact, they were first introduced over half a century ago.

As a matter of fact, it may even be longer if you include the Library of Congress recordings which were made for the American Foundation of the blind as a free distribution all over America.

A small company called Caedmon in New York, started recording the audio's of some of the great authors and poets of the 1950s. One of their earliest recordings were by greats such as Dylan Thomas, T.S. Eliot, Fitzgerald and Robert Frost.

Just what are audio books?  They are simply books that are recorded to be heard rather than to be read. Which gives the listener the convience of hearing a book while doing something else with their hands, such as driving. In fact, many a long car trip has flown by while listening to a good book. Just as one listens to the radio while driving, with audio books you have the added advantage of being able to control what you hear and when you want to hear it.

It was not until the late 1970s up to the 1980s that these recordings were transposed into audiocassette tapes. Finally in the 1990s audiobooks were in full swing.

With the introduction of the Internet audio books have now transformed from vinyl records, to audiocassette tapes and CDs, and are now even downloadable into digital formats that can be listened to with a desktop computer, laptop computer, PDAs, etc.

The added beauty of audio books is for those who do not like to read but who want to expand their knowledge on certain subjects or enjoy a good book. All they have to do is listen to a professional reader, who many times "brings to life" the story or the information in a colorful way, giving one the feeling that they are in the same room as the narrative.

Audio books are especially helpful to those who want to read the entire Bible but who find parts of it tedious and hard to plow through, but who discover that when listened to by an actor reading the scriptures, the Bible truly comes to life in a much more meaningful way than if one just was reading it to themselves.
